Ex-Silverdale Athletic teammates stage fun day for RNLI coastguards who tried to save Ashley West

FOOTBALLERS pulled on their boots for a charity match in memory of a former teammate who died after being swept out to sea.

Ex-Silverdale Athletic player Ashley West was swimming off the North Shore in Blackpool when he got into difficulties.

And despite the best efforts of coastguards to save the 26-year-old, he was confirmed dead at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on July 11.

Now his family and friends have staged a fun day at Silverdale Athletic’s ground for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to thank the volunteers for their bravery.
